"Fun is good." - Dr. Seuss Landscapes

student completed work.
Fun is awesome - and what is not to enjoy about the artwork of Dr. Seuss? This project was a simple combination of landscape drawing (foreground, middle ground, background) with pattern in order to create these very fun and vibrant landscape images.

We began this lesson by first studying many illustrations by Dr. Seuss.  In class, students pointed out the patterns they saw as well as demonstrated drawing them on the whiteboard.  After, students drew a pencil sketch of their foreground, middle ground, and back grounds to represent their imaginary landscape image.  This was completed by drawing in each section a different pattern to add some Dr. Seuss qualities to the drawing.  By using watercolor pencils students added color to their patterns to complete their final work.  By using the artwork of Dr. Seuss, the concept of pattern in a landscape took a very fun and exciting twist for my students.  They were excited to use such a well-known superstar (cause yeah Dr. Seuss is a superstar) to inspire their own rockin' artworks.

Well this project wraps up each of my classes this past semester completing a landscape project.  Until next year I guess before I bust out some landscapes again, but I still love these lessons!
