App Review: iPad for Printmaking!

My blogposts have taken a huge spiral down; probably due to nice weather and the craziness of the last months of school. (seriously though, has April even happened?)  However, my 5th graders have been busy little printmakers since we got back to class from spring break.  I ran into a little dilemma of only having 9 brayers - so the iPads stepped up and made an excellent addition to the whole instruction on printmaking. These next APPs I'm about the highlight were fun, easy, and a great visualization of the many techniques of printmaking.

UKIYOE - iTunes *Free
Now talk about a sweet app for students to get the idea of wood cut prints.  Ukiyoe allows you to 1) Choose an image from the iPad's photos 2) use an image from the app's photos or 3) simply draw/carve without an image.  Students were able to start with a blank chunk of wood and by using their finger guide a carving tool into the wood.  You even see the wood chipping away!  Once a student was done, they go through the whole process of inking and printing to see the final image.  I was excited about this app, because not only does it show woodcuts, but also gave students another great sense of subtracting to create a plate.

ANDY WARHOL: DIY POP - iTunes *1.99 Spent the money, because well silkscreening is super cool. This app was very easy for students to "burn" screens of images they found online. Then they painted and under canvas, and pulled the ink over their screen to make the final print. They enjoyed it!

I would definitely recommend downloading these and having them in your iPad arsenal!
